Health and Social Care
Curriculum Intent
To gain knowledge and apply the fundamental principles, concepts of the rights of individuals, person centred values, effective communication and how to protect individuals in Health and Social Care settings while developing practical skills to be applied to real life contexts.
Health and Social Care is ideal for those considering working within the health care or childcare sector in the future. During this two-year course, students are taught a variety of skills; ranging from how to communicate effectively in care settings to creating health promotions. Completing an OCR Cambridge National Level 2 in Health and Social Care will offer students the opportunity to progress onto a Level 3 course.
Year 10
This qualification consists of three units, each NEA unit equivalates to 30% of the overall grade with a written assessment of 40%. The first two units covered in Year 10 are R033 and R035, which are internally assessed and externally moderated.
NEA- R033 – This unit is centred around supporting individuals through life events. Students explore various life stages and how individuals can be supported through a variety of different life events. They will look at how different factors can influence health and social care needs. Finally, investigating sources of support that people can access.
NEA R035 – This unit delves into health promotion campaigns. Students analyse what it means to be healthy, the barriers facing individuals who may not lead a healthy lifestyle, culminating in students planning their own individual health promotion campaign.
Year 11
At the beginning of year 11 students will still be working towards completing their NEA.
Written Assessment R032 – This unit focuses on the principles of care in health, social care and early years settings. Students will study different rights that people have in HSC settings and the benefits it has on people when their values of care are maintained. They will also explore effective communication HSC settings and the impact that this can have. Finally, students will look at safeguarding and keeping people safe through hygiene and security measures.
