Curriculum Intent

To apply the fundamental principles and concepts of digital media through developing practical skills to think creatively, innovatively and critically. In order to design, plan, create and review digital media products independently with confidence.

This OCR Cambridge National qualification is designed to develop students understanding of how to use a range of computer applications to create digital images, animations and websites. Learners will how to produce a range of pre-production documents including storyboards, visualisation diagrams and scripts.

In the context of media learners will learn about film, television, radio print publishing and new media such as computer games, interactive media, internet and print publishing.

Students will use their learning in practical real-life situations such as:

  • Developing visual identities for clients
  • Planning and creating original digital graphics
  • Planning, creating and reviewing original digital media products

 

Students will also develop skills which are not only relevant to the media industry but to other real-life situations such as:

  • Thinking about situations and deciding what is required to be successful
  • Exploring and generating original ideas to find imaginative solutions to problems
  • Selecting the best tools and techniques to use to solve a problem

This course will enable students to undertake further study at Level 3 within media, film/TV, computer game design, graphics or IT.

Year 10

NEA- R094 Visual Identity & Digital Graphics (25% of final grade)

Students will learn how to develop visual identities for clients and use the concepts of graphic design to create original digital graphics to engage target audiences. While learning about the purpose, elements and design of a visual identity. This knowledge will be applied to the creation of their our ‘product’ with their own unique visual identity.

Learners will apply their own graphical design, demonstrating the planning process via the use of techniques, such as mind mapping, that show how to plan a visual identity and digital graphics.

Finally, learning software tools and techniques of imaging to create digital graphics. They will develop the technical skills to source, create and prepare assets for use within a digital graphic, as well as the saving and exporting of digital graphics.

Year 10/11

NEA-R097 Interactive Digital Media (35 % of final grade)

Students will learn to design and create interactive digital media products for chosen platforms. This will include a fusion of media-rich content including text, images, sounds, video and animation. Students will learn to select, edit and repurpose multimedia content of different kinds and create the structure and interactive elements necessary for an effective user experience. They will develop technical skills related to creating or managing assets within their digital media product as well as processes for naming and saving their digital media assets. Finally, learning how to test their digital media asset is fit for purpose and assess how to improve their digital media asset, making recommendations for improvement. 

Both R094 and R097 are internally assessed and externally moderated, making up 60% of the overall qualifications.

Year 11

R093 Creative iMedia in the Media industry (External written assessment 40% of final grade)

Students will learn about the media industry, digital media products and how they are planned, and the media codes which are used to convey meaning, create impact and engage audiences. This will involve exploring products, job roles, legal and ethical issues. Learners will explore the concept of audience demography and segmentation; how issues such as age, gender and occupation may influence media design.

They will practice producing documents to support the generation of ideas, including mind maps and mood boards. Also, students will learn about the laws related to the creative media industry including legal frameworks, copywrite law, regulations and classification and health and safety.

Finally, how platforms and media reach audiences, to learn about the media formats and files and how movie image files are compressed and moved.
