Child Development

In Child Development, pupils will develop their knowledge of working with children to support their development. Pupils will learn about the importance of both pre-conception health and creating conditions in which a child can thrive. Pupils will also learn about the health and nutritional needs of children up to the age of 5 years old. Pupils will develop a knowledge of how to prevent illness and protect the wellbeing of children in a childcare setting. Studying this course will also allow pupils to learn about the developmental norms of children and the role childcare and education play in the development of children. Coursework will play a big part in how this course is assessed with the 60% of the marks coming from coursework developed in class. This will be done through two units of coursework where you will create a safe environment and understand the needs of children from birth to five years and understand the development of a child from one to five years. There will be one exam as part of the course focussing on ‘Health and Wellbeing for Child Development’. This will be a 1 hour 15 minute exam completed at the end of Year 11 and will be worth 40% of the final mark. By studying Child Development as one of your options, you can open the door to lots of exciting careers in the future, including:
• Childcare
• Education
• Social Work
• Youth Work
• Nursing
